Approximately 20% of the police force's personnel are full-time, uniformed officers, and there are about 9,000 of them. The usual requirements for becoming a police officer are being physically fit, having good eyesight, and having a minimum of five GCE Ordinary level passes or a NITEC from the Institute of Technical Education, although those with lower qualifications may still be accepted. To join the senior police officers, a basic degree from a recognised university is necessary. Alternatively, officers from the junior ranks may be considered for promotion into the senior ranks, as well as national servicemen who are regularly considered for absorption into the regular scheme. All police officers are trained at the Home Team Academy, which is overseen by the Police Training Command. It takes six months to train a new police officer and nine months to train a senior police officer.
